November 2017 Congregation
The University of Ghana on Friday, November 17, 2017 held its Congregation ceremony for the graduating class of 2017 who have successfully completed various Programmes of study at the College of Health Sciences and College of Basic and Applied Sciences.
Students who pursued both graduate and under graduate Programmes in both Colleges were graduated.
Members of the University Council as well as Members of convocation arrived gorgeously in their ceremonial gowns in the Great Hall amidst cheers from students and visitors alike. Students were stunned to be served with UG branded bottled water to quench their thirst during the ceremony.
Professor Akua Kuenyehia, a member of University Council representing the Chancellor in a brief speech expressed warm congratulations to all graduands on the occasion of their graduation from the premier university in Ghana. She said; they have achieved an important milestone in their life’s journey. She further expressed her optimism that there are many opportunities that await graduands and encouraged them to take advantage of it.
The graduates were also encouraged to keep ties established with colleagues and also to join the University of Ghana Alumni Association to enable them be part of the distinguished network of Alumni of the University. She concluded by wishing the graduates the very best in all their future endeavours.
Rev. Professor Patrick F. Ayeh-Kumi, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences acknowledged the 139 International Students who were part of the graduands. He said the University appreciates the fact that these students made the University of Ghana their preferred choice of place for study.
He took the opportunity to congratulate parents and loved ones of graduands who have in several ways sacrificed to see them through to this level and to also be with them on this occasion. Prof. Ayeh Kumi, reminded graduates that; the University of Ghana uniquely and adequately prepared them to combine their skills and knowledge to positively impact on society and humanity at large.
Speaking at the Congregation, the Vice Chancellor Professor Oduro Owusu enumerated a number of achievements chalked by the University in several fronts such as, the enhancement of the security on the Integrated Tertiary Software (ITS), receipt of an amount of Twenty Million US dollars for the expansion of laboratory facilities and other expansion works at Nuguchi Institute of Medical Research in Legon to commemorate Dr. Hideyo Nuguchi’s 90TH anniversary.
The Vice Chancellor further stated that, in line with the University’s vision to position itself as a world –class Research-Intensive University over the next decade, a strategic plan was launched in 2014 to serve as a roadmap towards attaining the vision.
He said in 2017/2018 admission cycle, the University admitted 14,129 students to the various programmes run on the Main Campus, Korle-Bu, and City Campus as well as Distance learning.
The Dean of the School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences, Prof. Solomon Ofori-Acquah on his part and as protocol demands, presented graduands of the School for the conferment of academic degrees to which their study entitle them. According to him; they have followed the approved programme of study in BSc. Medical Sciences, BSc. Nutrition and Dietetics, BSc. Occupational Therapy, BSc. Diagnostic Radiography and BSc. Physiotherapy over the stipulated period and passed the required examinations.
The representative of the Chancellor dissolved Congregation amidst cheers and excitement from graduates and their invited guests.
