Overview and History of the Department
The department of Dietetics was established in the 2004/2005 academic year with the admission of four males and eight females to pursue a Masters programme in Dietetics. Prior to the inception of the department, there were only two qualified Dietitians in the country who happened to have been trained outside the country . The department therefore is the premier institution in the country for the training of Dietitians. The core mandate of the department is to train highly skilled dietitians qualified to administer dietetic and nutrition services at hospitals, schools, workplace, industry etc. to ensure wholistic wellbeing of individuals in the country. Since its inception, the department has trained the core of faculty manning the various tertiary dietetic training institutions in Ghana. As expected of a premier institution, the department has top faculty in the country's dietetics field with varying areas of research interest.
The MSc Dietetics programme was originally started as an MPhil/MSc programme with the key objective to train faculty as well as clinical preceptors to champion the teaching of dietetics at the undergraduate level in Ghana. With time the programme was reviewed to expand the scope of taught courses. Products of this programme are now faculty in dietetic departments in other universities in the country and the West African sub-region. Additionally, the programme has strengthened clinical training and produced many qualified dieticians. Some of these are now working in healthcare institutions, universities and the food industry nationwide. A number of the products have also proceeded to complete PhDs in Dietetics or various nutrition-related fields.
