Welcome to the Department of Physiotherapy at the University of Ghana.

Whether you are a prospective student, a parent, an alumnus, a colleague or a partner, I am delighted that you have taken the time to visit our website.
Our Department was founded in 2001 within the School of Allied Health Sciences (SAHS) now School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences (SBAHS), College of Health Sciences. It is the first and main institution for training physiotherapists in Ghana, and our graduates now serve in hospitals, communities, sports organisations, schools and research institutions at home and abroad. We are proud to be trail blazers of physiotherapy education in the country, and proud of the generations of graduates who have built the profession on that foundation.
Our regular four-year (direct entry) BSc in Physiotherapy programme and our two-year Top-Up BSc in Physiotherapy programme for physiotherapy Diploma holders prepare graduates to practise independently. Physiotherapy is regulated in Ghana by the Allied Health Professions Council. We take a holistic, competency-based approach to learning. Students develop strong clinical reasoning and hands-on treatment skills and they taught to apply the best available evidence to promote health, prevent disability and maintain and restore physical function. They also taught to care for the physical, psychological and social wellbeing of the people and communities they serve. The Department also trains postgraduate students at MSc and MPhil level, who add specialist clinical expertise, research skills and leadership.
We are also following the University’s processes to introduce a PhD in Physiotherapy in due course. The PhD curriculum is currently before the School of Graduate Studies for review. Once the University processes are complete, it will be submitted to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission for consideration.
Research and service are central to what we do. We aim to be an increasingly research-oriented department that produces evidence that will address the real health needs of Ghanaians and other nationals elsewhere beyond our borders. Through seminars, workshops for practising physiotherapists, our work with the Ghana Football Association, Ghana Olympic Committee and the University’s Sports Directorate, as well as the external moderation of our final-year examinations by colleagues from universities outside Ghana, we stay connected to the profession and keep our standards high.
Our vision is to bring good health, comfort and happiness to people. This resonates with the University’s own call for innovative research, teaching and learning that is people-centred and supported by technology and data. In the coming years, we will strengthen our commitment to student-centred teaching, modern and online learning approaches, postgraduate and doctoral research training, mentorship of early-career staff, and partnerships with clinical sites, professional bodies and universities across around the globe.
To our students, I say: “You are joining a profession that changes lives”, and our staff are committed to supporting you every step of the way. To our alumni, we value your continued involvement, and we invite you to mentor, supervise and speak to our current students. To our partners and employers, we welcome your feedback and look forward to collaborate more with you.
Please explore the website to learn about our programmes, staff, research and activities, and do not hesitate to contact us with your comments and questions.
Once again, welcome.
