University of Ghana's MSc Dietetics Programme Achieves International Accreditation

August 10, 2026

The University of Ghana's MSc Dietetics Programme has achieved international accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), USA, becoming the first programme in Africa to attain this distinguished recognition. This landmark achievement highlights the University's commitment to excellence in dietetics education and to the preparation of graduates who meet globally recognized professional standards.

The accreditation journey involved a comprehensive review and strengthening of the curriculum to ensure alignment with ACEND's competency-based standards for the education and training of dietitians. These efforts culminated in a rigorous site evaluation conducted in November 2025 by an ACEND assessment team from the USA.

This accreditation offers a significant advantage to graduates of the MSc Dietetics Programme who are now eligible to apply for dietetic internship programmes in the USA. Upon successful completion of the internship requirements, they become eligible to sit for the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) Examination for Dietitians, an important step toward professional credentialing in the United States.

This achievement is the result of years of dedication, strategic planning, and collaborative effort. Special commendation is due to the Provost (College of Health Sciences), Dean (SBAHS), Head of Department and the team in the Department of Dietetics, whose vision and perseverance have driven this process over the past four years. Their commitment to advancing dietetics education has positioned the University of Ghana as a trailblazer in dietetic education in Africa.

The Department is also deeply grateful to the ACEND Foundation for its invaluable support and sponsorship throughout the accreditation process. Their partnership and investment were instrumental in helping the programme achieve this historic milestone. As the first ACEND-accredited dietetics programme in Africa, the University of Ghana continues to demonstrate its leadership as the premier university in dietetic training in Ghana and beyond.
