The aim of the programme is to produce dieticians who will be competent to meet the standards of performance expected of entry-level dieticians and practice independently within the ethical framework of the dietetic profession. Additionally, to produce dietitians who will fulfill their professional obligation to individuals and the public, by using appropriate clinical reasoning and problem-solving skills based on sound scientific and clinical evidence. This aim conforms to the mission of the College of Health Sciences which states that: “Our mission is to produce highly qualified and competent health professionals and medical scientists to provide promotive, preventive and curative services to meet the health needs of the nation and the global community through world class excellence in teaching, research and dissemination of knowledge”.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The objective of the programme is to equip students to be able to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to confidently work autonomously with individual clients on a one-on-one basis assessing needs, providing therapeutic advice and facilitating behaviour change based on the clinical and personal information available as well as the evidence base for practice.
  • Translate the most up to date public health and scientific research information on food, health and disease into practical advice to facilitate behaviour change and enable people to make appropriate lifestyle and food choices.
  • Show awareness of his/her role and sphere of influence within the organization and demonstrate the ability to work in a collaborative manner with a range of healthcare professionals and other staff in enabling safe and effective dietetic service delivery.
  • Recognize the limits of his/her current scope of practice and work within these and demonstrate awareness of the clinical risks associated with any dietetic care plan.
  • Show familiarity with government policies for the provision of health care as they impinge on the dietetic service and understanding of policy issues concerned with public health nutrition in Ghana.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with the current systems for the provision of health care, education and social sciences and recognize opportunities to influence health and social policy and practices.
  • Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the key aspects of the range of disciplines underpinning dietetics and ability to critically evaluate and synthesize these key aspects into dietetic care.
  • Career Prospects

    Graduate of the programme could work in all of the following areas;

Health facilities, Universities, Schools, Non-governmental Organizations (NGO), food industry, media, security services, security services, wellness  programme organizations, sports industry. They are also trained to have entrepreneurial skills and therefore have the ability to establish themselves if they so desire.

  • Entry Requirement
  • An applicant for admission to a BSc dietetics degree programme in the University of Ghana must have at least credits (A1 - C6 in WASSCE and A – D in SSSCE) in English, Core Mathematics and Integrated Science  and three elective subjects in Science. In addition, applicants should have at least a grade C6 in WASSCE/D in SSSCE in Social Studies/Life Skills .
  • Core: Credit passes in English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science & Social Studies
    Electives: Credit passes in Chemistry, Physics and either Biology or Elective Mathematics
